bleach will kill the algae, after use any brand granite or silestone spray cleaner that you can get at walmart or home depot for countertops. that should own your headstone looking like bright! good luck!
DO NOT CLEAN IT!!!! If it is really old it will disenigrate earlier your eyes and be useless. Talk to the Cemetary caretaker about the essentials of the headstone, take LOTS of pictures and tell to the local Historical Society.
if its covered in algae close to that it likely to be a ruff stone and probably not granite. likelihood are it marble and the best thing to do is shift to a memorial shop and ask them to clean it for you as its really not something you can do yourself as we use sour to do this, it should cost about lb70.

Curiously, I've just done that. I checked beside the "caretaker", (sorry, don't know his proper title) to make sure I wouldn't upset anyone, afterwards set to with scrub brush and a bucket of soapy water. That cleaned the stone up other without destructive it and without making it look too artificially "tarty".

sugar soap in dampen and a bit of a scrub should make it look resembling a decent grave again, i remember fixing someones garve earlier 9i reset some stone - mother cleaned, but thats what she used)
It went to drop by my Brother in California and required to visit my Parents grave. My brother said to me he wish there be a way to verbs ther headstones. I call the cemetery and asked them the best road to do this, They recommended That I use PUMICE STONE with vinegar & dampen mixture. I did it and it made them look like hot. Pumice stone is the same entry thats used to clean BBQ grilles. They look close to bricks but wear down as you use them. It takes some rubbing but they looked great. A hardware store will enjoy them.
