install thermostat?
Answers:
That's an awfully vague question - can you clarify? Analog or digital, what kind of heat, do you have A/C, single thermostat for a whole house or are there more than one? All of these questions will affect the answer. The most basic answer is, if it's a simple thermostat for heat only, there should be a pair of wires there already, probably red and white (I'm assuming you are replacing an old thermostat?) which will go to corresponding contacts on the new thermostat. When it gets cold enough, a mercury bulb will tilt and short the contacts, which will kick in the heater. When it gets warm enough, the bulb will rise and the contacts will open.
But, if you also have A/C, multiple thermostats or anything digital, there will be additional wires for those controls as well as power to run them.
Other answers:
I've heard horror stories about installing thermostats. If your old one is bad try to get one just like it or made by the same company.
If you are trying to upgrade your thermostat then try to buy the same brand as your old one. Make good notes on how the old one is connected. (Incase to need to put it back on.) Check both heat and cooling. You don't want a surprise when it's cold and your heater doesn't work.
Good luck.

Make sure that your new Thermostat is compatible with your unit, because if it is not, you would have to rewire that darn thing to work.
