Answers: First, I would obtain the Voltage Ohm Meter as suggested above.
Second, if you have too abundant wires, then STOP what you are doing and try to find out the answer past turning on power. You could have (and may have) shorted out the muted.
It probably would have be better to have two whites together next to a connector and out of the way, and two blacks together beside a connector and out of the way, and only just use one black and one white wire.
Just don't mix the black and white wires.
Also, formulate sure that your light works, and that you turn on the frothy after you turn on the power.

not enough info here...what type of socket? what type of light? what is voltage of circuit? was at hand a feed cable coming to and going from the fixture? is in that a control switch, photocell or some other "turn on" device?
It sounds like the ripened fixture had two lamp and you cut the lamp wires. You should connect the different lamp telecommunication directly to the "house wires." If the new fixture have two lamps also, after they are connected inside the fixture, since there is solitary one set of wires.
If you actually hold two black #14 solid wires and two white #14 solid wires coming from the junction box contained by the ceiling, you could have enjoy two circuits; however, you should also have two switches.

The remaining two tie together,it will be a black and a white which happens singular on a switch leg. Let me be clear I'm basically suggesting another possibility I dont know if you blew a breaker on that first try or not.
patenthen may be wrong because you switch it on and nothing happen. if it were a switch leg afterwards you should have shorted the strip.
more likely you hold the other wires for another fixture. again you should test this first back doing anything- you may get hurt by guessing which is which.
check also your flood lights you may enjoy busted it already when you shorted the line...
