Answers: handrails on both sides, wider steps, equal altitude, and non slip strips on steps. or if your handy with power tools conceivably using a router you could router some grooves into the steps, go a step further and place the non skid strips within between the routered grooves. and remove the varnish ( if these steps are indoors) if they are outside you can add somewhat sand to the paint and repaint them........... that may work indoors also, if the steps are painted.
