How do you stain unfinished wood?
Answers:
give the wood a light sanding then apply the stain either with a rag or a foam brush - always brush in the same direction.
let dry, repeat as many times as you think you need to to achieve the desired tint
Other answers:
There are lots of easy 1 step, brush on stains on the market.
Just pick something and try it on a sample piece.
Go to some of the DIY web sites.bobvila.com, hgtv etc. or simply ask the person at Home Depot...they'll show you.
When you get it nailed down, come over to my house, I have a deck that needs to stained.
Good Luck

wipe on, wipe off. use a brush or paper towel (rag can leave lint) to wipe on the stain. wipe off with paper towel. simple eh. the longer you leave it on the more the wood absorbs the stain, so experiment with a scrap piece of same lumber. also test cut ends. they absorb stain very quickly. with yellow pine, you may even want to use very diluted shellac to slow the absorption. this is kind of tricky, so it may be best to skip that. After stain seal. the are several sealers, polyurethane, shellac, varnish. I like varnish. also twin seal. between coats of sealer, sand lightly. this is just to remove any bubbles or dust. after the final coat of sealer, use very fine steel wool. the trick with sealers is to work quickly and don't leave excess. it is very hard to remove excess sealers. so several coats are better than two heavy coats. there are stains that also seal, but you don't get the quality deep finish. last thought, check the labels. some stains and sealers don't work together. on the label of stain, it usually has a warning not use a type of varnish or poly. oh yeah, open the windows. you need ventilation. GOOD LUCK
