I need a 25ft. 220v extension cord for my generator. Outlet on generator is 120/240v, four plug adaptor.?
Need to know what type of plugs and wire to purchase, and where to purchase, so I am able to make the cord.
Answers:
Go to Home Depot or an electrical supply store and get the proper 4 prong plug, some 10-3 wire and a socket for the dryer, and hook them up. The green wire is ground, the white wire is neutral, and the red and black wires are the "hot" wires. I presume you are trying to run your dryer from your generator. If you are trying to back feed your whole house through your dryer outlet, then make sure you shut off the main power switch to your house before connecting your generator to your house. (you don't want to electrify the whole neighborhood and kill the electric line workers, now do you?)
Other answers:
You CANNOT do this. It sounds to me like you are going to backfeed into your dryer receptacle to provide limited power to your home during an emergency. This is illegal and will end up killing someone.
You need to install some type of transfer switch so power can't backfeed into the utility lines and kill the utility personal trying to repair your electricity.
Your portable generator with an output of 240 volts will backfeed through the utility transformer and step up to 4160 volts and possibly kill a utility worker trying to repair your electricity.
