Solid fuel fireside? What's best to use?

Have bough a cast iron fire, and am going to use logs contained by it. I need a fireside, but cant afford a slate one, and don't want a granite one. My hubby could lay some floor tiles, will this be ok?


Answers:    I wouldn't, the heat is expected to break them, they will also discolour in no time.
