How do you weigh up the string on stairs?
Answers: Are you using PRE-CUT "Stringers"?
In any case I regularly take a breadth at the point where the first Rise will be located; Vertically estimate UP to where the top of the stair will be; floor or otherwise; and divide to determine number of rise and tread. 8 inches is pretty standard.
If this is an sheltered staircase; I'd probably go beside pre-cut stringers; as I have regularly.

I forget the name; but a great book describing every detail is "The Blue Book". PLUS one can purchase a multi use triangle square for the purpose.
next to a tape standard!
No seriously what is you need to know? Are you trying to work out a staricase?
I believe the string is the vertical space between steps.
