Someone bought me a TV stand and I want to stain it dark can youi tell me how to do it. Thanks?

If it has a 'shiny' finish, it is coated with something like poly. You must first remove this if you want to stain it. Sanding it, or chemicals will work.
once you have that off, you can either put another stain ontop of the existing one, or removie that stain all together. To remove the stain, use chemicals made for it (found at paint stores). When you are done, it will have an ugly semi-dirty stained look to it. Evenly spray and wipe bleach on it to get rid of this color. You will end up with 'unfinnished' wood, and can stain it, and poly it, like a new piece.
