Sod a Patch of Lawn?

I accidentally killed a patch of my lawn by over fertilizing. I need to re-sod the area.

Can someone give me a step-by-step on how i resod that patch.
I gather i must rake out the excess nitrogen and wash out but then what do i do. Must i cut out the area to fit the sod and then break into the sod so the roots can grow from its dirt?

1. rack out dead grass.
2. get some soil amendment from the garden center
3. spread on top to the dead area
4. apply grass seed of a type that is recommended for your area. do not use kentucky 31
5. keep moist
