What is the best way to tear down a garage?

Hi Snowmen1976

:-)

IF this garage
is away from other structures....

You might really have some fun with this.

Look at it like this.
you are going to have SOME cost in doing this
no matter which way you go.

BUT

Consider contacting your local Fire Department.

They LOVE old structures to train on and in.
They may set fire to it,
and put it out a few times, letting all their new guys
get valuable experience.

Then they will burn it to the ground.
What you will be left with is about 1 10yard dump truck load of burnt debris if they burn the bulk of it.

In that case, hire a heavy equipment man to come and either load it onto a dumptruck and pay him to haul it away

OR

If you are fortunate enough to live out of town a ways, you may be able to just bulldoze a hole,
shove that sucker into it, and cover it.

If it is attached to your home you may need a professional.

If it is a detached garage you should be able to do it yourself. Disconnect any utilities that may be connected to the garage such as water or power. Remove any glass windows, but take your time don't simply shatter them. You'll just get stuck cleaning up the glass. Remove as many braces and cross beams as you can. And then use a bulldozer, tractor, etc. to push it over. Or you can cut two, "4 inch holes" about one foot off the ground on both sides of an exposed corner of the building. Wrap a logging chain through the holes and around that corners support beam. Hook it to a large pickup and pull. Make sure your chain connections are good and that the chain is at least 25 ft long. The building will come down. Make sure you get a permit if you are in town. And if at any point your worry about something you should "err" on the side of caution.

After removing windows and disconnecting utilities, if you have no bulldozer - get a dumpster and fill it:
Remove fixtures
Remove interior finish (Sheetrock, paneling)
Remove insulation
Remove exterior siding top to bottom
Remove the roof in 16"-24" x 24" - 48" foot sections:
using old saw blade, cut halfway between each rafter one at a time, ridge to fascia, through shingles and decking. Saw this strip into 2-4' lengths. You can push one side down to pry loose.
Remove trusses and/or rafters and joists. Brace walls as needed.
Remove walls: saw bottom plates then top plates at corners and drop entire walls or perform in sections.
Do as Whimsical sa stated BUT brace the walls up before you remove the roof. And remember safety no real rush. Be Safe and Good Luck
