How do I shingle a roof when there is are 1inch spaces between the roof boards?

My house is over 100 years old and after lookin in the attic I see that the roof boards are spaced about 1 inch apart. Is ok to shingle right over top with that space in there?

Answers:
no never shingle over any gaps, you can tear the old roofing off and can go and get a few bundles of 1x1 strips and add them in the gaps the start to cover it back up, that is the easiest and cost effective way. and reason for the gaps is cause all the old house had cedar shake shingles and they could go across the gaps

Other answers:
No it is not. Rip all that old stuff off and put plywood up (1/2 inch). You need it strong enough to both walk on and handle extra weight (like snow) plus you have the added bonus of putting a second layer on in 30 years.

if you use wood shake shingles, you can shingle over the gaps
Why was this done? Was it a cost saving measure on older houses? Or was this to help the roof/house "breathe"?
you dont have to pull the old batts off, you can OSB right over them, then lay the roof.
