Answers:    Hi at hand are so many things you can do it's similar to hving a blank canvas...first where on earth are the stairs? are we talking basements steps or stairs going to the upper chunk of the house...you can get engineered hardwood flooring and bonding agent it to the steps which would look really nice..if your handy... or you can re carpet or you can use sheet vinyl or you can put laminate flooring...what would be best for you to do is stir to your local Lowe's home improvement center and progress to the flooring department and look at all your option and have a
flooring specialist guide you along.... fitting luck
check your local home improvement store

our Menards/Lowes/Home Depot hold pre made stair runners in copious different styles
if you are not thinking of re-carpeting try paint or wood stain. i wouldn't suggest ceramic tiles.
as the stairs are timber in that will be a slight amount of movement when going up and down the stairs. this movement will cause the cement to crack and the tiles with come loose.
vinyl tiles would be ok.
paint or stain i would suggest would be best as even if you adjectives the treads and risers you would still need to paint or stain the strings( the sides of the stairs).
