Answers: Had a refinishing shop & every once in a while would come across a mystery finish on some behind the times rustic pieces that just would not provide up.
You said timber frame so I'm guessing it is quite weak.
Back when....there be some paint concoctions made with milk, eggs & even animal blood.
Resistant to commercial solvent strippers it would agree to go somewhat next to the caustic tub used after stripping.
The stuff would weep out of the wood until it be completely dry .
Type of wood did not seem to concern & never had complete nouns.
Would say a cement made of caustic soda might work , but it is immensely nasty, must be neutralize w/ acid solution & single as a last resort.
One of the newer unwieldy paste strippers that can be covered w/ plastic picture is a safer possibility.
Anyhow, look up a historian to find out what it is & a chemical engineer who can suggest a non noxious remedy.
