what to use for mounting a wood fireplace mantel shelf on drywall?

Answers:
You don't. Mount it to the studs in the wall behind the drywall. Use a stud finder or a strong magnet to find the nail heads. Then screw a cleat to the wall for the mantel to mount to.

Ok, I am assuming that its a "full fireplace mantel", instead of a mantel that hangs over the fireplace with out the sides :)

Now, get yourself a stuf finder, and find the studs surrounding the fire place. (Assuming that the mantel extends beyond the fireplace), then countersink some nails in your mantel and pound some nails into the studs, then get some buttons and glue into the nail offset holes. When the glue is dry, take a japaneese saw and flush cut the buttons and no one will know where the nails are, or how you mounted it.

Now, if your mantel doesnt extend beyond the fireplace, then drill some holes into the mantel, (yea, its hard to do, because it looks so nice, but, ya gotta do it to secure it), now, use a small bit first, then drill throught the mantel in several places, two on the upper corners, and two in the middle of legs, (one on both sides), then, after you have drilled them straight through, take a long nail, and put it into the hole and pound the nail so it makes a mark on the chimney, (of course, you have to have the mantel set where you want it first), then, take the mantel away and drill some holes where the nails are, and put anchor sinkers in, and then, after that, (lead ones), then get some lag bolts and lag the mantel in..(oh yea, off set the lag bolt heads so that they are burried,"basically, drilling a bigger hole, where you drilled the small hole first, over it, so it enlarges it, but only to the dept of the heads on the bolts and a half inch more for the buttons), then, after you lag the mantel to the chimney, put the wooden buttons in and glue and then cut flush or sand flush, then paint it, to what ever color you want.

I hope this helps..

I wish you well..
