my toilette won't flush unless you hold down the handle the whole time. what do i do?
Answers:
The chain to the flapper needs to be tightened / adjusted.
It is the cord / chain / strap that attaches to the handle in the tank.
If the flapper itself is damaged, the toilet will usually appear to flush by itself every so often. In fact the tank is just refilling to replace the water that has drained out.
Before spending money, try adjusted the chain. Don't just start replacing things as that is unnecessary.

It maybe that the flapper, which is supposed to have some air in it, may be cracked, and letting water in it, so that it doesnt come up all the way, and when it does, it wants to go back down, instead of being held up by the air pocket.
Or, the chain is too lose and needs tighted.
But, if its a recent developement, then, there is something wrong with the flapper itself...
Go to the local hardware, or LOWES and get a flapper for a few bucks and put it on..

Remove and replace the drop valve inside the tank top. If that doesn't solve the problem replace the mechanism inside the tank. They don't make them to last these days using plastic.
Adjust the chain in the toilet tank. This is usually from the chain stretching over time. If you shorten it, the plunger will open farther and stay open while it flushes.
It could possibly be from the float ball being too far down in the tank also. There is usually a screw system to adjust this. If the float ball is too far down, not enough water accumulates in the tank so there is not enough pressure when you flush.
