How can I polish sheet metal?

I crafted some small (2 inch x 4 inch) insignia plates out of sheet metal for a Cosplay. I would like to polish them to a mirror-like finish.

What is the best technique to shine them up?

Answers:    In academy they gave us an aluminum block and we used differents grits of sand article, starting from a rough say 400 or 600 and drizzly sanding it dipping surrounded by water and sand the block in circles across the metal, next work way up leisurely to a finer grit, to a very fine grit using the drizzling sanding this would give somebody a lift off the scratch and then use a polish on it to polish it up next to a soft pad. Takes awhile but does get hold of a good finish I consider it is probably a poor mans path of doing it. If you got the tools I would travel with a power tool method of some sort, conceivably a dremel I believe they have buffing wheel for it
What metal? Basicly, if it will polish you use a felt rudder and increasingly finer polishes to take out the colossal scratches consequently the fine scratches. Most hardware stores will hold sticks of tripoli and jewelers rouge and suggestions on the packages for using them.
