In some parts of Ireland and Britain people believe that the shoes must be turned upward to block and hold the luck or "the luck will run out." (This is the way I've other used. I have a necklace from James Avery that points up.)

it depends what country you are within if you are in uk afterwards it's supposed to be like a u, but within France (or Belguim.. can't remember ...lived in too heaps places!!) they place it upside down, .. so the luck is sucked up into the shoes!! never heard of the c shape...
