my valve on pool pump no longer has writing on it which way is closed to turn water flow off?

Answers:
Turning left loosens the valve, and right should tighten the valve. Therefore turning right should stop the flow of water.

if it is inline w/ pipe it is open,,,or turn clockwise to close
Generally clockwise closes and counterclockwise opens. HOWEVER some pool valves (Jandy, for example) work the other way. Best way to tell is to close the thing and see if water is still flowing. Then you'll know for sure.
The valve should be kind of triangular at one end, what ever pipe lines up with this part of the valve is closed.
If it has a straight handle that you turn or twist 90 degrees, then when the handle is in-line with the pipe, it is on. When the handle is perpendicular to the pipe, the valve is off.
