how do you make picture frames have the distressed look? like the ones they sell in craft stores.?

Answers:
depends on HOW distressed you want, but anything from

lightly sanding the corners- taking off paint and making it look less perfect

to

hitting it with a smaller hammer or with chains,

to

letting the dog chew on it

====================

you really can be creative here. But what you can do to the frame is going to be based on how big and how sturdy the frame is.

Other answers:
for white frames= sand edges in spot with sand paper rub area with white paint on a rag, wipe the paint on the wipe it off
for wood frames= sand, then use brown shoe polish paste.. apply to frame and quickly rub off, repeat to desired darkness

Sand paper! RUB RUB RUB for desired look!
Make fun of them. Maybe tell them they're fat.
Use the claw side of a hammer or use a torch to get a beat-up look.
Stain a plain wooden frame, then take a knife and scratch the heck out of it. rub it over with a lighter or darker stain, which ever you perfer, then sand some spots. Stain again and Voila! Aged!
Go to the store and buy some glossy photo paper. With your favorite word processing software type the following in a huge font. "S.O.S". Hit print from the file menu...

Next place your S.O.S print inside the frame...

Hope that helps.
I paint the frame the color I want (Usually light color) then I take an OLD electric toothbrush to it. You want the paint to still be a little wet, but not totally.
If you are building them by yourself? Get a piece of chain and beat up the wood then make your cuts or I found that gravel and a car driving on them makes it look very rustic before you put them together. Never tried it on a completed frame.
make them out of distressed old wood, like old barn siding!!
