Ceramic Tiles?

They say that good ones are those with thru color. I suppose it means that the color goes all the way through.

But are not all ceramic tiles, including porcellaine made of clay and fired. So how could the top, or glazed layer go all the way through.

Is not it only the natural stone that has thru color.

And how does a glazed porcellaine differ from a polished one.

Answers:
The good ones as you say are the ones where the colour goes all the way through.
These are called fully vitrified ceramic tiles as against glazed ceramic tiles.
There is nothing wrong with the glazed ceramic tiles but generally it does depend upon where these are going and how much wear or traffic they will be subject to.
The glazed ceramic has the finish only on the surface so if these are subject to heavy foot traffic the finished surface will wear away and you see the basic ceramic material below.
With WALL tiles a glazed ceramic tile would be quite normal as these would not be subject to heavy wear but not as a FLOOR tile in busy areas as they will show signs of wear.
With a glazed tile the main body is made of the basic clay material with the finished surface basically burnt on.
A fully vitrified tile has the clay mixture mixed with certain pigments required to give the particular colours which is the same through the full thickness of the tile.
Even with a fully vitrified tile the finished surface can be
glazed or just polished or matt, it is a matter of choice and again depends where the tiles are to be fixed as you would not want a glazed or highly polished tile in any wet areas such as bathroom or kitchen as they can be slippery.
A non slip tile should be specified in such areas.

glazed tiles can be made of porcelain ( white clay)and terra cotta ( red clay) The quality of the clay and maufacturing process can differ greatly.
As well as the thickness of the glaze.
Some hand made, artisan type, or mexican , tiles are fairly delicate and are recommended not to be used on the floor.
There glazes can chip easily and the tile pad can crack.

The only tile I have seen with color all the way through are a natural stone (like granit) terra cotta tile
( natural red tiles that you seal yourself) or man made composite stone ( where they grind up pieces and stuff and bond together like for counter tops in a slab.)

I hope that helps some.
