I never got the grease stain out of mine so I bought an iron on patch big enough to cover the stain. Looks pretty cute.

Well I dont do laundry but my mom does and sometimes she puts dishwashing detergent or even thatgojoe hand cleaning stuff or even bleach. But you might want to do a bit of research to make sure you wont ruin them more with my suggestions.

I have found that rubbing dawn into the spots and then soaking in a solution of dawn for a couple of hours before washing works well. if they have already been washed and dried then a product like goop or gojo can help lighten the stain if not eliminate it. too much bleach will just weaken the fabric.
The trick is to first soak the shorts in the same grease/oil and then wash them. That way you won't get a grease/oil line where the original stain was.
If that doesn't work, at least they'll burn quite well and make a good barbecue fire starter, a pleasant and marginally safer alternative to the gallon of petrol I use, but much less impressive to the neighbours..
Try Lestoil, put a little on the stain and work it in with a tooth brush, then throw in the washer and wash with Lestoil, you may have to rinse twice to get the Lestoil smell out of the fabric. This products works well on oil and grease stains.
Spay some ether (engine starting fluid) on it and blot it with a dry, white napkin/paper towel
