Above Ground Pool Filter?

If I replace the pipe that comes into the sand filter, it is a flexible pipe, with a rigid PVC pipe does the pipe still have to go down to the ground and then back up or can it be horizontal? My feeling is it must go to the ground or the water will just bypass the sand.

Answers:
Yes just replace it, the filter does the job, the flex pipe is just long so you can put the filter anywhere. It to can be cut off to run straight. The only problem with rigid pipe is vibration. You may end up with leaks over time.because it has no "give" .

Other answers:
As long as the hose runs from the pump discharge to the filter inlet it doesn't matter where else it runs. Can go all the way around the pool first or straight into the filter.
