What is the Maximum Rise for a Residential Stair?

I was thinking that 8" is was the maximum for a primary (as opposed to utility/secondary) stairway in a residence. Any carpenters out there with the current code? Thank you.

i just build stairs last weekend and max. rise is 81/2 and the min tread is 9 1/4 and one more thing that might help is the max overhang on the toe of your step is one inch.hope this helps.
