I shorted out a capacitor while installing a Venmar range hood. Can I replace capacitor or is it all toast?
Answers:
Guess this is a motor start capacitor. Get to the motor so you can see it run, then put power on briefly... does it run, or just sit there and hum..? If it runs, great. if it hums, flick it with piece of wood to make it turn (saves cut fingertips!) Does it run? If you can make it run, go to your domestic spares shop, take the capacitor, get a replacement(they are cheap enough) , replace the capacitor with new....try now...does it run..? if it does, you win, else its new motor time...sorry.

Probably didn't do any harm. Try it and see if it works.

Most capacitors are made to be discharged from what I know. I've done it on some HID ballasts accidentally. Go ahead and give it a shot.
depends on amount of current was discharged. just repower and see if the cap hold the charge first (need an ampprobe for this) turn power on hood if it discharged and starts it's good if not buy a new range hood without a cap in it.
