Whats within my compound?
Answers: Answer one is probable valid, though I've not encountered such. What I do regularly find on MUD that has be unused for any length of time; here in FL at smallest; is mold and mildew. I'd say within any case rake up off and discard. MOST especially if it's suspect; and/or if it might donate unwanted residue.
An aside regarding the mold. I find it uncommon that mold attacks drywall paper; however not the gypsum compound between the paper; but MUD isn't the same compound? Just one outmoded mans two cents.

Some compounds hold colorant added so you can easily see where on earth you have applied. 2nd coats are sometimes different colors so you know where on earth you left sour.
