It is because the old ropes that are on rudder pullies on the sides is worn out. I just return with an old courtyard stick and use the measured cut piece to hold up. When you want to close the window, basically take the stick away, and lay flat on the sill out of the channel. You will know where it is when you want it again.
A window lover will help hold it up to when surrounded by use.
The best solution is to have a trial modern vinyl window installed. Me, I painted a nice piece of 1/2" x 1/2" alike color as the window frame and prop it up contained by the window slot on any side. Blends right in and works resembling a charm!
Go to Your hardware store they have shims to hold the glass up .

If here are pulley fittings at the top of the groove the sash slides in, nearby are counterweights concealed in the pane frame, (behind the trim).
Most of the time there is a removable panel contained by the groove, (probably painted over), to allow you to access the weight nouns and reconnect the weights with a unmarked rope, (cotton clothesline is fine), and balance the sash so it stays where on earth you put it.
You may have to remove the trim to do it.
Your sash cord/chain is broken.
You involve to remove the lower sash, and on each side is a plate screwed on. Under that plate is a sash freight (a long lead weight) that attaches to the sash through a pulley system.
