You will be much happier if you pull the tape and refinish with a smooth ceiling. Textured finishes do not hold up well to the eye, and cost a fortune to strip away. The old popcorn ceilings are a thing of the past. Here in California, people are getting rid of the all over the place, and because they had asbestos in them, it is very pricey. Repairing drywall is not nearly as bad as you think it will be. Just somewhat messy from the dust.
