OK lets try. first lets assume you are using landscape timbers, 4x4's, 6x6's or 8x8's. set the bottom layer halfway in the ground making sure it is level on all sides. Cut 2 of the boards 8 ft long subtracting the width of the type of board that you are using. Such as if you using 4x4's subtract 3½" from 8'. Now do the same for the 4 footers. Now the tricky part to explain. One of the 4 footers will be next to the 8 footer on the end so the whole length would be 4 foot. Now the next 8 footer will attach to the 4 footer to make 8 foot. Now attach the last 4 footer you should be able to see how it fits to make your rectangle. Repeat the process alternating the joints so that no joints from the next course is on the previous joints. On each of the joints you will need to secure the boards. I would use hot dipped galvanized lag screws after you pre-drilled the holes going through the side of one board in the end of the other one. Each course will have to be attached to the previous course by drilling down each log every 2 feet or so in to the top of the previous course. continue until you have reached your desired height. Now install a rubber pond liner which can be purchased at your local home improvement store. putting sand in the bottom of the box before you put the liner in will help it from getting a hole later. Make sure that the liner comes at least halfway over the top board and nail using hot dipped galvanized nails (roofing nails work fine) now attach 5/4 boards on the very top to cover the liner. Install a pump, water, fish, plants, and enjoy. Send me an e-mail if you need anymore help.

There's some very good information on this site. It's for hot tubs but could easily be adapted to a fish pond.
