Mahogany, not African, but the real thing. It's a soft wood, so it cuts easy enough, takes a finish well, and glues well. Not real cheap though.

Buy a sheet of finished plywood. It looks good, isn't that expensive and takes paint and stains well. Trim it out with some decorative molding.
