the 48 inches is the distance between studs. If you doin't mind seeing the screws, you can either screw directly through the edges of the frame into the wall studs, or if you want a professional look with no screws showing:
Your local hardware store will have picture-hanging kits. These come with hookes, eyelets and wire. The braided wire is important, so spend the little extra and buy the kit.
Get the heaviest rated kit they have. The come in sizes that will handle up to 100 pounds per hook. Safer that sorry is the guide-phrase here.
Find the center of the wall where the mirror is going. locate the studs. Using two studs, secure a heavy duty picture hanger on each one. These are basically nails that go through a type of "L" bracket that lays tight against the wall.
You need to use two studs so you can adjust the position of the mirror from side-to-side. That is, unless where you want to position the mirror has a stud exactly in the middle, which is going to be highly unlikely.
On the back of the mirror, about six inched down from the top, screw in two eye-screws. take the picture wire and loop and extra 8 to 10 inches through each eyelet. Leave a couple inches slack in the wire, so it has some maneuverability on the hooks.
Wrap the extra wire on either side around and around the slack wire. This gives you a secure connection that won't slip once the weight of the mirror is hanging on it. If the mirror ends up hanging "out" from the wall at the top, you can always take it back down, and re-do one of the wired ends, pulling out some of the slack to make the wire tighter.

That is going to be one heavy mirror. You need to screw your fastners into studs. If the location of the mirror is centered on a stud, use one hook, if not use two. I stress...SCREW INTO STUDS. That would be a whole lot of broken glass the next time a truck goes down the street.
