can leaves help or harm when planting a garden?

Answers:
Leaves are an excellent source of organic matter--something all soil could use more of.

Leaves help improve drainage, whether your soil is heavy clay or loose sand.

Leaves are full of nutrients, especially micronutrients rarely found in commercial fertilizers.

They make a terrific mulching material.

They serve as food for earthworms, and we all know the value of earthworms in our gardens.

Leaves turned into the ground both provide nutrients for plants and food for worms as you see above. Leaves falling onto the surface of the ground are also good in that they help with runnof and slow the time that water evaporates from the soil.

leaves help keep the moisture in the soil and when they degrade it turns into nutricious fertilizer.
They can help. As mulch, or as ground cover to keep roots cool (or warm in winter)
You don't want to have a bunch of rotting leaves on your plants though. That will burn your plants.
Good answers!
You may want to try chopping the leaves with a lawn mower with its bag attacted. It looks nice. Also, if you seed annuals, then mulch with full size leaves, the seeds won't be able to poke thru the mulch if the leaves are not chopped.
