What is the difference between a squash and a gourd?

I'm looking at squash and gourd iconography in art and need to know if there is a huge difference between the two.

Answers:
A squash is a type of gourd. But a gourd is not necessarily a squash.

Other answers:
Yeah, they are in the same family. How about you can eat squash but not a gourd? That's the first thing that comes to my mind.

Gourds tend to be ornamental while Squashes are always eaten.
gourds are grown to make organic containers they are not food, they are used for water and wine and sometimes oil,the top is cut off and a cork is used to plug it up.
