A fly SWAT and a few strategically placed glue traps will help.
wash down with vinegar, and then place bay leaves where you see the ants coming in.
The most effective thing I have found is liquid ant bait that can be placed in areas that the kids and pets cannot get to. The ants take the bait back to there nest and it kills the whole colony.
My mom always has this problem, they are attracted to any food in your house. So keep all food (even cereal) in air tight containers. I mean EVERYTHING! But things in the fridge or microwave to store. They even like toothpaste, so make sure that you put that away good. If you have children, then make sure you clean any food out of their rooms and off of the carpets/floors. If there is nothing for them to eat, then they won't stick around! Also find where they are comming in your house (usually you can follow a trail) and plug the hole. I wouldn't reccomend using chemicals if you have pets/children. This will work though.
If they are sweet eating ants this works GREAT!

We had carpenter ants when we lived in Michigan. Unfortunately, we were eating waffles for dinner and my husbands SECOND helping of syrup contained ANTS~! YUCK!

I started thinking, They LIKE the syrup and my Aunt Genie told me to use powdered borax to get rid of them (aparently they didn't like the taste and didn't eat just the borax) so... I mixed the borax into a pie tin adding the syrup and mixing well. We had TONS of ants for ONE DAY then they were gone for the entire season!!
what kind of ants ? this will narrow it down there are a lot of diff. ants and each one of them have specific habits are they inside your house or outside? try to capture a couple of them and take them in to your local home depot store and read the ortho book located in the inside garden dept. this book has all the answers that you'll ever need . now for your second question is it safe all pesticides have a warning on them but unless you were to ingest quite a bit if these pesticides there relativly safe i use water based pesticides in and outside of the house and all i do is keep the pets off until they are dry and i do not spray the grass where i let the dogs or cats on because they would find a way to ingest it by chewing on the grass or getting it on there paws and cleaning it off with there mouth mostly the cat...
mix powdered boric acid with water and spray it where the ants are and let it dry. As with any thing keep the kids and pet away until its dry but when its diluted it would take quite a bit to harm a pet or child. this works pretty well we have little tiny ants like you wouldnt believe and this worked for me.
If you can find the locations they are coming in use regular ground cinnamon .... it worked really well in our old house in Mississippi, but do not forget to eliminate the reason they are coming in - water, food, anything sugary or to escape flooding. Also, if you have a frame construction house get an exterminator under it to spray. Good luck, MAC
If you live in a house then you should get Ortho Home Defense and apply on the inside perimeter of your house than apply Ortho Max Lawn & Garden insect killer ( ready to spray ) attaches to the end of your water hose... apply to your lawn and around your house and your good to go. Trust me this will get rid of all the insects outside of your house and no more ants will come inside your house. Apply as needed. Not to brag but my answer will be your chosen best answer after you follow my instructions.

Go down to your local rental company and ask if they have a Spiny Anteater for rent , they are real gentle around kids and other pets it usually takes about two weeks before the have eaten all the ants including the queen which is critical to get rid of or they'll just continue to produce more ants, if the problem is very substantial rent a pair of anteaters that should do the trick.
Boric Acid is very good and it also works with roaches.

Good house keeping is very important...remove crumbs, clean up spills, store all foods in sealed containers. Remove the source of food and the ants will search elsewhere.
It really would depend on the type of ant you are dealing with. Here in Texas our biggest problem are fire ants...

Other ants can be dealt with in many ways. Surgar ants and other common ants can generally be deterred using orange oil. If you want to kill the ants then boric acid will do the trick.

I would avoid using ortho or other pesticides that will ultimately kill other insects besides ants. Most commercial pesticides will kill your beneficial insects as well.

Carpenter ants can be effectively controlled with diatomaceous earth.

I hope that helps
This may sound a little out there but you can get a bottle of Skin So Soft by Avon and sprinkle that outside around your house, believe it or not it really stops the ants from coming in the house. And if you pour it on an ant hill it will kill all the ants in the colony. Plus its kids and pet safe.
