3 years ago I planted a 10 foot balled and burlap mountain ash tree.?

The first year it did well but the 2nd and 3rd year it lost its leaves contained by September. After researching this, I believe that when I planted it I set it in the ground too weighty. I placed the ball close to a foot below the ground horizontal. Is there anything that I can do to free this tree?

Answers:    You will have to remove soil around the trunk until you surface it is the same as if you hadn't accidentally put it surrounded by too deep.

Some times you may enjoy noticed trees contained by landscaped areas that enjoy a little stoned retaining ring around them so the ground may be a foot or two superior than it is around the base of the tree. This is for matching reason. IE you can own a good robust tree but it will get sick and eventually die if you pack a foot of dirt around its trunk.

Landscapers will use an unscrew tree well if they are raise the overall grade but want to keep hold of well established trees from dying due to the increase around the tree's stump nouns.

Here's a website I found that touches on the subject:

replant or remove the foot of soil and replace with mulch
