Anyone heard of orange colored fungus on grass?

We used to have healthy grass but now it has brown patches and when we walk through, an orange residue shows on our shoes! What is this? We thought it was from our sandbox but it is everywhere now. Anyone know about this?

Answers:
Hi, what you have is a disease(fungus) called "rust". When you walk thru patches of the rust, it releases the spores and that is why you are finding the orange coloring on your shoes and such. It is caused due to higher temps and a sustained wetness (lots of rain). Usually the turf that is nitrogen deficient is more susceptible to getting the rust. What we normally recommend is to mow the lawn regularly and collect the clippings and make sure that it is on a good fertilization schedule. (which you can do all organically) and no fungicide is necessary.

Other answers:
Brown patches are a definite sign of diseased grass. Whatever you do, do not eat that grass.
