What is a way to kill the weeds and grass that grows between the cracks in the cement?

Round-up is awesome...to an extent. Round-up (RU) is known as a total kill-It kills everything. Which is of course what you want to do. It is absorbed quickly by the plants and is very effective. But there are downsides, it can migrate, (wash away with water to undesired areas) and it will kill everything it touches. Also it does nothing to prevent reinfestation, so you'll be out spraying again next week. Its also important to remember that it can take up to two weeks for the weeds to die. RU is only half of the step. You need to get a hold of a product called Surflan (SF) you can buy it from wilbur-ellis, or from an agriculture store. SF is a (bright orange) sterilant, meaning it prevents seeds from germinating. RU & SF are compatible to be mixed together, so you can do this in one step. SF needs water to be activated but can sit for a month without degrading.
So mix your RU & SF in your sprayer (follow the directions) and then spray the cracks. let the Ru "set"(dry) then you can wter the area. The RU will have set so it won't migrate and you'll activate the SF. now you'll be weed free all season long!

We use weed-b-gone in our driveway and in the sidewalk cracks and that helps, but we found you have to pull the dead weeds or grass after it turns brown so that it doesn't come back
Boiling water (use a tea kettle) pour directly on the weed kills it instantly and no chemicals to hurt children or pets
there are lots of products you can buy to kill unwanted vegetation in cement cracks.you don't mention if organics are important to you, so Roundup is the most popular choice among gardeners. there are also other roundup products that not only kill the vegetation, but prevent it from growing back! cool stuff! hope this helped. just be careful, these products will kill any plants they touch.
