In UK, Ladybird was named after Virgin Mary (corruption of name). Why do we Canadians call it a Ladybug?

They call it the same as America and it's not a bird, it's a bug or insect and lady insect doesn't sound that good so ladybug it is.

We used to call it a Ladybird bug, and then over a period of time, we shortened it to Ladybug.
