I have a diffenbacia plant that needs to be trimmed its top heavy?

Do I just cut it down and replant that portion of it. What do I do with the rest of the plant?

Answers:
this works for me....find wear there is a node in the plant...sort of where it looks like a new leaf could sprout from...cut into the stem 1/3 of the way...use a non serrated knife...cut a V into the stem...use potting soil and pack into the groove and take a piece of plastic ans secure around the base about two inches from the cut fill the rest of the plastic with your soil and moisten slightly with water and seal at the top of your plastic....in a coulple of weeks there will be roots in your baggie when roots have developed cut below the baggfie and plant as normal....bottom of the plant that is still in the pot will grow new leaves and you get two plants...have fun...oh support the plant when you cut as you said it was top heavy

What I have always done, and it has always worked, is to cut the plant back at whatever point you want. Place that portion in water and wait for it to develop roots. Once that happens, you can plant it in another pot. If you continue to take care of the piece left in the original pot, it should grow new leaves; hence, you end up with two plants! Good luck!
