Do people not notice when their lawnmower has become obnoxiously loud after it has been used a few years? Or is it that people don't know a muffler can be easily replaced on the little engine for $10? Or is noise pollution the in- thing these days?

yes we do..not only does the muffler quieten some of the sound on the mower but when it is bad the mower will not run right and in some cases will not run for long or run at all.....so who ever you know needs a muffler please tell them so..tell them that you noticed their muffler sounded a bit loud and continuing to let it go unchecked can result in the mower not running
