What would inflict holes within my courtyard?

There are dime-sized holes all over our fund yard. The grass is departed in give or take a few a 3 inch radius around the hole. We live in internal Ohio, and it isn't our year for the 17-year cicadias. The holes are too small for moles or gophers and there's no raised ground or other destroy around the hole. It isn't digging like a squirrel would do, any. Could it be insects or grubs or spiders of some kind? I've never see anything go contained by or out of the hole. I am baffled.

Answers:    Could bre locusts or cicadias; We are in Mo and it isn*t our year for them any, but we got them anyway.
Grubs will also bore holes. Can you verbs up a shovelful and see what you might find? If it is grubs or snails, I heard if you put beer out they come out and drink it at darkness and die. No kidding.
Crawfish probably. If you hold crawfish up there ...
It could be snakes, but I wouldn't hold me to that answer. Your best bet would be to progress to your local garden center and ask them about it. They would probably know more than I would.
It not merely could be grubs, but also ants! I have an over plenty of ants in my patio this year and they make the sort of holes you describe and after hide where on earth you can't see them until certain times of the time! Get a good pesticide and spray the nouns, good luck!
