How can I can I control the japanese beetles we have this year?
Answers:
Hi, Let me start by saying almost every one you hear from is going to tell you the pheromone traps don't work....BUT...they do work, it is all in where you place them.
Get a couple depending on the size of your yard.
Put them as far away from your cultivated yard and house as possible! Those traps will draw all the beetles to them and you don't want the traps near you!
Change the traps when they get full, or throw them out and get new ones.
I work for a Big East COAST GARDEN CENTER CHAIN THAT PRIDES ITSELF ON USING LITTLE OR NO PESTICIDES AND STILL PRODUCING A CLEAN CROP FOR IT'S CUSTOMERS.
Other answers:
Many people would tell you to lock them up in their room. While it may seem crowded, Beetles don't need much space-per-beetle. They get along with each other well too because generally the Japanese Family unit is strong and members support each other....in most cases this is evident by stressing the importance of education.
Also, if you don't feed them well but regularly, they develop an emotional dependence on you and tend not to stray too far from you.
Lastly, I don't care about the political correctness of "time outs" and favor corporal punishment as a remedy to Beetle misbehavior while being sure not to overdo it.
After all, the Bible says "spare the rod, spoil the child" True..oh so true. This can be applied to beetles as well.
Good luck!
BYTHEWAY, how many of those little goons you got?

Bag A Bug traps (attractant) or Triazicide = killer.
Both available at Lowes and Home Depot
For instant results, just spray them w/Seven or Eight, (same product). You can also use the dust but the spray is easier and more user friendly.
