We have an electric tiller, are you supposed to push it forward or pul it back? If you have any tried and true tricks of the trade, please share them. We have heavy clay soil (it was hiding under 2 - 3 inches of topsoil that the previous owner of our house dumped on top of the heavy clay soil). They also covered over rocks, broken up concrete and glass which is getting spewed out as I attempt to till over my garden. The rocks are large enough to get jammed between the blades and the housing and I have to unplug it and dislodge them. The area I need to till is about 6 feet deep and 8 feet wide - I want to transplant raspberry bushes into the area I'm working on this weekend after I till it, but later this fall I'll need to start tilling a huge area thats about 8 feet wide by 25 feet deep and will transplant perrenials over there.

You little electric is not made for this type of work... Tillers come in different sizes and styles (2) Generally ones with the tines rotating counter clock wise is for general work or ground thats been broken before.. With what you ar describeing you need a reverise tines this rotates clock wise to the forward line of travel. This type is normaly used to break up the ground the first time. No need to buy one check your local rentals for one.

To be honest your little electric tiller is not up to the job. You need one with some power to it. Generally you move forward with the tiller.
tillers are usually pulled back slowly as it digs in but don't go to deep or you will wear yourself out. some tillers are self propelled to go forward. but most you just pull back on.
Not too difficult actually. You push it for starts unless you want to get tilled yourself. Start engine with tines and wheels disengaged. Push as deep as possible to the ground. Engage blades then engage wheels. It should pull itself. If you have a lot of rocks it may be a little bumpy but otherwise should be okay.
