Does anyone have a good method to keep a bear out of their yard? More specifically, away from house/deck?

Mom's house and yard (100 mi. from where I live) has been frequented by bear. Neighbors have had ornamental shrub damage. I was thinking if an ultrasonic device (or sonic)...
Any ideas or solutions?

Answers:
fit an electric fence (low voltage, you don't want to kill them do you? merely discourage them)

Other answers:
you will have to fight it man to bear.

put a female bear in next doors garden
lmao @ silver ! Ummm anywayz onto a more serious note, maybe u could look into that underground fencing they have for dogs, mind u, i dont know how u will get the collar part on the bear, soo, hmmm maybe the electric fence above ground would be wiser,or maybe calling animal control. :)
sit on that porch till it comes back and shoot it*kidding*i wouldnt hurt it"it might beat tha **** out of ya!!so i would leave it alone leave honey or watever they like at the edge of ur woods every 3rd day move it about 10 ft. so u got it following it eventually to some where else like a neibiors house far away!!
You can purchase "Big Cat" (lion and tiger) manure from the garden centers. This practice was discovered in China and is just now catching on in the states. They have learned that spreading this "dung" around your property scares off Rabbits, Bear, Raccoons, Groundhogs, and even Deer.
There must be something there that is attracting the bear. Bird feeders, humming bird feeders even garbage container etc... Bears will normally keep well clear of people and urban areas. If however the bear population is high there could be a shortage of food and this would cause bears to do "abnormal" things. Be cautious of that situation. This time of the year some mother bears are abandoning there 2 year old cubs to make way for newborns. The 2 year old cubs find themselves fending for themselves and will frequent places with easy food supply (garbage cans etc) If this is the case keep any food supply contained in an air-tight container for a few weeks, the bears will move on.

Do not take this situation lightly, wild animals could change there demeanor at any time in a split second and a bad situation could become drastic.

Call your local wild life authority and see if they can help. They live trap bears and relocate them here in Ontario. I cant comment on how they deal with them in your area.
Put up a fence with razor wire on top.
had bear troubles a couple of years ago, neighbor wasn't storing trash well. put up senor lights, every time light came on it took off.
Move to a country where you only see bears in a zoo.
buy a pump action shotgun
