Many new tractors are hydrostatic, which means forward and reverse are controlled with foot pedals, and they don't require you to shift gears. These are very easy to control in challenging areas (around trees, landscaping, etc.).

I just traded in a one-year old Craftsman for a brand new John Deere, and the John Deere is the way to go. Yes, more money, but way more tractor!
