I am trying to grow pumpkins???

I have a pumpkin plant in my backyard that has taken over a large space. My question is when should I start to see some pumpkins?? there have been blums on the plant but we have not seen a pumpkin yet?? someone told me that i would not have pumpkins this year on the plant......why would this be??

Answers:
You should see Pumpkins this year, because Pumpkin plants are annuals which means they only grow for one growing season, so that person is wrong. The reason your not seeing pumpkins is because the female flowers are not being fertilized. If the female flowers are not fertlize you won't see pumpkins. Heres how you fertilize the female flowers. First you have to find a flower with a small pumpkin (thats the female flower), then you have to find a male flower (the male flower has no small pumpkin under neath, you will only see a stem at the bottom of the male flower). Then what you do is pick the male flower and pull off the petals. Inside the flower you will see pollen, what you have to do is rub the pollen from the male flower onto the pollen of the female flower, once you do that very soon the pumpkin will grow. I hope this is a help to you.

Hello!
When did you plant the seeds? It usually takes between 90 and 120 days for pumpkins to mature. Where do you live? Geography can play a great part in the growth of your plant. Check your seed package if you still have it, and that should give you a good indication of what to expect. If your plant is getting good sun, in good soil and plenty of moisture, it should be fine depending upon, of course, when you sowed the seeds. Blooms are a great sign of course, but depending upon where you live, it may be getting a bit late in the season! Good luck to you!
