Why do roses have thorns?
Answers:
*Chuckling* "Flowers are weak creatures. They are naíve. They reassure themselves as best they can. They believe that their thorns are terrible weapons..."

Technically they dun have thorns, they have prickles...
Prickle - A spine-like superficial outgrowth of the stem. Roses have prickles, not 'thorns.'
Thorn - A branch of a plant that becomes woody, hard and pointed. Cactus plants have thorns, locust trees have thorns. Rose do NOT have thorns as the 'prickles' on a rose do not develop from 'branch' tissue.
Roses have prickles to protect them. Prickles ward off potential nibblers -- grazing animals like goats or cows who might eat rose plants for food. One mouth full of prickles, and they look elsewhere for dinner! Many plants have protective mechanisms like spines, thorns, and poison to ward off hungry herbivores.

everything that is alive today ANYWHERE is alive because it has through evolution[ GOD not withstanding] developed amongst other traits , defenses which helped it survive long enough to procreate. thorns perhaps keep animals away from eating the succulent buds. its an evolutionary thing..
