I live in the Midwest... what type of flowers should I plant in my front yard?
Answers:
You can plant almost anything you want if you amend the soil. I live in Indiana and regularly add things to my soil to make it better. Since your soil is sandy...add compost and something to help hold the water around the plants roots..sphagnum peat moss is great for this. We get a hard freeze so I look for hardy plants and note their sun/shade requirements.

I live in the midwest and I have dahlias, lillies, impatiens, petunias and vinca. My garden looks great right now, but I also ammend the soil with horse manure. That stuff works wonders!

marigolds and iris's and water lily's
Mulching the ground is excellent idea. I have a yard full of hostas. An easy to care for plant if you locate a slug resistant variety. I also have Shasta daisy, which happen to love the sandy soil if you fertilize them occasionally.
