When you buy potting soil how do they filter out all of the seeds so only the seeds you plant will grow in it?

Ok so most plants (like grass) re seed themselves or have some way of reproduction. How do they get all of the living plant matter out of potting soil? Do they cook it to kill the plants? wouldnt that kill the nutrients that the plants need to grow?

Answers:
They sterilize it with steam. The heat kills any seeds that are in it.

The nutrients remain plus some potting soil has nutrients added.

This is one of those instances where "you get what you pay for..."

It is definitely worth your money to buy one of the more expensive, bagged potting soils. The label should tell you that the contents have undergone methods to eliminate weed/grass seeds from it.

You can cook it in the oven or the microwave if you're that concerned about other things coming up. You can add fertilizer to get the nutrients back in.
I wish that I had the intelligence to just keep a plant alive.
What did I do now? It sounds as though my mouth got me in trouble again. I am sorry if I offended you. You sounded as though I said something nasty. My so called kidding sometimes does not sound as kidding. Please, again, forgive me. Your q&a are wonderful.
They probably autoclave the soil (high pressure steam sterilization~ 15min at about 245 F kills most all bacterial endospores, so it would most definatly kill the seed).

The nutrients are mineral based rather than proteinous compounds so are not affected by the sterilization process.
