HELP! what is the best way to remove a large thicket of bamboo? preferable not having it grow back?

in my backyard, there are several thickets of pervasive bamboo, and i need a good way to remove them without them growing back again.

Answers:
The "best" way? Use dynamite or larger explosives. You can NOT dig it up, unless you remove approx 3 feet of the entire surface layer. The roots will stay alive, it has no heart to kill. A backhoe might work, just make sure you dig up and destroy EVERY bit of it.

Other answers:
cut the bamboo down and then dig the root out
cut the bamboo down and then dig the root out
Borrow some hungry pandas.
Dig it up! Sorry, I know that sucks but with the way it spreads it's the best way... Otherwise you'd have to use a lot of chemical and I'm an organic gardener so NO to that...
get a panda?

Seriously, cut the bamboo down to a few inches above the ground, then using a hoe,or metal rake, turn the soil. This will uproot them and you can collect the "stumps". Any roots left in the ground should just die off.
you have to dig up the root system in order for it not grow back
There are many ways to get rid of unwanted Bamboo. The thing to remember is that you need to be meaner than it is! Here is a site with several suggestions:
